can a 3 piece slate pool table be hauled in one piece without taking it apart.?Q) I am wanting to purchase a used pool table and it is very heavy but taking it apart will cost alot of money. I thought if it could be taken off the base and hauled that way it would save me alot of money but I didn't know if the slate would collaspe if it was turned on its side. I could sure use the help ASAP because I only have a couple of days to get it. Thanks Brenda
A) You can haul it that way but it is very, very heavy. I rented a uhaul and transported it fully assembled and had no trouble. When I got to the new house I took it apart and carried it in. I would not suggest hauling it on its side, or flat on the truck floor. It costs alot to have someone disassemble then reassemble and re felt the table, but if you break the slate its really gonna cost you.what type of wood would be used in place of slate in a pool table?A) Wood?? You gotta be kidding me. Wood expands and contracts with temperature and humidity. You'd eventually have a warped table. That's why slate is used. Marble could be used too, but is very expensive and much heavier.
I've never seen a pool table with the felted area of the table made of wood. Ya think there's a good reason for that? When replacing pool table felt, do you buff the slate? and how do you attach it under the slate to hold it?Q) Got a used pool table , DYNAMO , Bar size yesterday for 350 bucks.. Slate.. the felt is still ok, but eventually i'm gonna replace it and I dont want to pay 250 bucks to have someone do it..
A) You can clean the slate just with a damp cloth. You shouldn't have to buff it.
I believe, and I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, that your table has no backing frame on the slate. Most larger tables do. Most bar boxes don't. If it does, you simple staple the cloth to the backing frame. If it doesn't, you are going to have to get some 3M Super 77 spray adhesive.
I was going to continue but then I found this...

Just read that. In particular, scroll down about three pages to the post by Billy Bob. It's long. You can't miss it. He goes into great detail about reclothing a Valley table which is quite similar to the Dynamo.Anyone know a cheap replacement i can use for a pool table that isnt slate?Q) ???? im going to build one in votech just wonderin if anyone knew something i can use to make it with besides slate...any ideas
A) If you are building a mockup table any thing that you can put cloth on
if a real table Why would you not use slate??i have a 3 piece slate top on my pool table and i moved it now i need to fix the seams?Q) when they installed my table they used a powder like stuff and mixed it with water, what is this stuff and were can i get it.
A) simple you need bees wax for its the best dont know about that powder stuff...it would have to be smooth down to where it wouldnt affect the balls...dont use candle wax but go on line & look for bees wax...once you found that you'll take a small torch with a pair of pliers and run it over the seam. just do half then take straight edge razor and take up the excess...then do the other side...its not hard to do & I wish you the best of luckanybody out there know anything about setting up a pool table? particularly setting the slates into place?Q) so i just got a pretty decent used billiard table the other day. there was no felt on it but i got some new. i am confident i can felt it myself and save $200 they tried to charge for a "proffesional" to come out and do it for me. and thats on top of the $250 i just paid for the felt alone. 450 total just for a sheet of new felt to be tacked to an 8' x 4' flat surface by a "pro"? i think not, so im doing it myself!
now the only thing that i cant figure out is that there appears to be some sort of joint compound that had been used where the slates butt together. like a type of mortar or fix-all type compound ? if anybody the the specific stuff or just what type of product it may be that would all help and would be absolutely awesome!
A) Spend the extra $200 - and watch carefully, then you do it yourself next time!
The initial setup is the most difficult. If you insist upon doing it your self, check the compound to see if water softens it. If so, remove it (it will be DuRoc water soluble putty), if it does not soften, you are probably in trouble (it is Bondo and will chip the slate when you remove it). Be very careful when you are setting it up and leveling the bed. I would recommend using beeswax to fill the joints unless you live in a hot environment, then the DuRoc is best (IMO).

I can no longer recommend this group in general as it has turned into a very sophomoric flame-war battlefield lately. There is some very good information, if you can stand the collateral damage....new rails for pool table?Q) I bought a used gandy pool table and was wondering if I could replace the rails with any type of rails. I haven't had any luck trying to find one online or around here. the rails themselves aren't that bad but the skirt under them is kind of beat up and the rubber needs to be replaced. Does any one know if I can just find replacement rails for it. It's an 8 foot 1 inch slate that's about 10 years old.
A) Try ebay, or froogle.
