Looking for an old computer game to download?

Q) This was probably.... I don't know, 1995-1997. The game was called Gems, I'm certain of it. It was one of those ping-pong type games where you have a thin line at the bottom you drag back and forth and you bounce a ball up, and it hit these brightly-coloured gems. It was very pretty and I loved it when I was younger. Anyone know where I can obtain this?

Does anyone remember the old Amiga500 computer game?

Q) called Blue Max. It was a simple side view of a plane shape that moved forward and you could machine gun ground targets if you were low enough or you could bomb targets. It also flew over a river and you could bomb ships. Hours of fun without having to wade through a 3 inch thick instruction book. Is there anywhere I can download that simple game? I think there is another version of blue max but you need to go to Uni and get an ology to be able to play it.

A) Check google for "Abandon ware" basically these games have been abandoned by their developers which means it is perfectly legal to download and play these games. Though most require some sort of 'emulator' and that can be where the 3 inch thick instruction book can come in. They need really to be played in DOS. Though there is a DOSBOX which simulates the DOS evironment thus enabling you to play. Clicking on "DOSBOX" will take you to a page where it gives an explanation, "Get it" downloads the game. http://www.abandonia.com/games/958/download/BlueMaxAcesofGreatWar.htm

Found two old computer games controllers - how to connect?

Q) So, I went rat-hunting in our attic on account of my mum is scared of rats and my dad is lazy. While I was up there I found a whole bunch of old computer stuff, including a commodore (haha), lots of floppy-disk games and a whole bunch of Battlefield and football Manager disks, and loads of first-person shooters. With the first-person shooters there were two controllers - a stick and the traditional-style PS1 controller, but for PCs. Thing is, I don't know the first thing about plugging stuff into computers - I can use them brilliantly, but when it comes to putting them together, i'm an idiot. These controllers have the connections that look like scart cables but with two little screw-type things on either side. What am I looking at here? How do I connect them? Also, with old controllers am I likely to need to download drivers? Do you know of any safe online sites that won't download crap into my system? Ta! x

A) In the good old days, different devices had specialist sockets. Printers used either a parallel, or a serial socket. External floppy drives connected into a serial socket ( in these days floppy disks were really floppy ), scanners into SCSI cards ( or specialist adapter cards you had to fit into your computer ) Sound cards & integrated computer units had game adapter sockets. these where D-type style. Unless you have a machine so old that it has a game adapter socket, the controllers won't be a lot of use to you. USB is used for most things nowadays, printers / controllers / scanners / etc. Looking at the cost of a cheap controllers, it's not really worth even trying to get the old ones going. --------- A nice bit of memorabilia, but, not a lot of use unless you have the complete working system. Even then, how long could you play with it until you got bored. :0)

Looking for old Breakout-style computer game that had different types of brick and also bat effects?

Q) Hi! I recall years ago playing a game that I would love to find. I thought it was called super-breakout but having searched and found this game it doesn't appear to be right. I can't recall if I played it on an Atari/early PC. There were well over 100 levels (120?) and you could save at certain levels. There were all different kinds of bricks - some you had to hit several times before they'd disappear, some wouldn't ever go. I can't recall it being in colour - more likely it was black and white with different shades, but that's not definite. One of the main things that happened was that different things fell when some bricks were hit - these you could choose to collect and would have an affect on the bat/ball. Some would make the bat invisible/double , others would make the ball more powerful and it would go through several bricks at once instead of bouncing off each one, others gave new lives. I would love to buy/download this if anyone can recall its name. Thanks!!

A) Well, if it was older it might be Super DX Ball. http://www.blitwise.com/downloads.html Also you should try the modern game called Fizzball where the ball bounces around and sucks in animals. It's sooo fun! http://www.bigfishgames.com/download-games/1259/fizzball/index.html?afcode=afd64f20f3f8 Ok, maybe that will help you.

how can i make a game on a cd into one exe file?

Q) when i downloaded worms world party on my old computer it was just one large exe file. now i bought the cd for another computer but the game requires the cd to play and it is very slow at loading stuff as it is always reading from the cd. how can i make what is on the game cd into one large exe file so i can run it all off the computer so it will be faster???

A) sounds like they may have changed the copyright protection policy to always read from the CD.. to make sure its not being used in breach of their copyright. Some installations offer the option to install everything onto your hard drive... that way round the programm only has to read from hard disk which is dramatically faster than the CD. One trick you used to be able to play was to copy the entire CD onto your hard disk, and then run the unstall from that hard disk directory.. used to work.. not sure if it will in this case. failing that probably the only option would be to copy the install CD and instasll from that. again some copyroght policies detect that trick and stop you duplicating the disk. if that is so then consider copying it on another machine (eg a Linux PC or possibly a Mac) and see if that circumvents the copyright locks. Obviously you would only do this int he unlikely event that your original PC was broken and you needed to install the game on your repalcement... anything else would be illegal, and NONE of would want to do that would we?

HELP ME COMPUTER NERDs!!!!!!!!!?

Q) My problem is I have recently brought a new PC Desktop and its been fine and i have installed games before and i know this game should work fine on the system and its not a old game either and the computer has the specifications to play this game. As it is Brand New etc. I installed a game last night and that was fine. But then i came to click play on the game and it would progress from there onwards. The message was something along the lines of; Error Microsoft Visual Runtime C++ Library Error. and then after that it just says games name and this is abnormal error etc. I am guessing something is stopping the game from playing but i dont no much about this kind of thing. The text is Error; Microsoft Visual Runtime C++ Library and the game is Rollercoaster Tycoon 3. I have tried lots of websites and uninstalling it etc. also contacted atari with no reply so there useless and i have spoke to dell on phone and they cud not help. Is there something i can download? or wot can i do PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP ME!!!!!!!!! I didnt mean it to be offensive. Sorry if you took offence to the word Nerd. Please Help. ;) Jesus Christ!!!!! I have a PC that cost me bloody 1600 pounds. it has a very good video/graphics card. it plays other top games fine. It has a 1gb graphics card. It has the required specs by far in that area to play the game. So its not the card!!. So what cud it be? I also dont liek these people getting funny about nerds! i was not reffering to any1. I even reagard myself as a nerd! whats the big deal!

A) It sounds like there may be a problem with your video card. Since you say it is a new PC, and you are certain it has the right specs, I would take it back to where yhou purchased it and have them service it (if you bought the service agreement.) I had a similar problem with a laptop I bought a year ago. The video card was defective and they had to replace the whole motherboard because of the way laptops are built. It was covered by the service plan, but I had to suffer with no computer for 3 weeks.

This might be a dumb ?, but if I have an old computer game, can I still download it on Vista?

Q) It is an old Sims game. I am trying to create a room for part of my senior project, but when I tried downloading this program that I used in 97,98, 99, and 2000, it would not let me. HELP PLEASE! Thanks.

A) Where were you downloading it from and what type of program was it? If you are capable of getting the file on the computer, you can use the compatibility wizard. It "fools" the file that it is running on Windows XP or previous versions. Just right click, go to properties, and then on the compatibility tab, just check to run this program in compatibility mode, then pick the version of the OS you want to use.

Anybody know where I can download a game from my old computer?

Q) It had some animal and a mouse and you tired to build a wall around yourself to keep from being eaten by the animal. It might have been a cat. I just can't seem to remember the name of the game. It was a very old computer, but the game was lots of fun. If you have any idea what the name of the game I am talking about is, PLEASE tell me. Thanks

A) If this is what I think it was it came on one of the microsoft game packs for windows 3.1. Not sure of the games name though.

Old Computer Game...?

Q) There was this old computer game I remember play when I was young, back when Chip's Challenge was around. I have no idea what it was called. It was on a...Windows 95 I think, and I remember going around and shooting guys. Was there a popular 'shooting man' game then? If so, could you tell me the name and maybe where I could download it for free? Thanks!

A) One of these probably: Doom 1 image: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/d/d1/Doom_ingame_2.png/240px-Doom_ingame_2.png or Wolfenstein (WOLF 3D) (image: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7e/Wolfenstein_3D_title_screen.png)

Does anybody remember a very old computer game that was Space-based?

Q) Back when I was a kid (around 15 years ago) my dad had a game for our old computer. You started out with a spacedock and 4 fighters. You'd fly around searching for planets (The command Alt-A told the ships to look for any planet) and they'd show up as dots a bit bigger than this O. They'd have a letter on them that would tell you what the planet did. There were Energy planets marked with an E, D planets that sent you back to your base, T planets that refilled your torpedoes, and little minibases you could fill with energy to make a second base if your first one got destroyed. There were gateways to other dimensions that looked like little rainbow blocks (your ships were green, and the enemy ships were red) and you would look for the enemy bases and try to destroy them. You could go invisible for a little bit by pressing I, fire torpedoes by pressing spacebar, and P for firing phasers. If you do, what was it called? And is there a version of it somewhere to download? THANKS! It was a DOS game and I think my dad called it "TREK" but he was a trekkie, so that might not have been the actual name of it.

A) The game WAS called Trek. It was written by Carl McLawhorn of Wendel, NC, in roughly 1987. I have a copy of version 2.8 that I'll send you. Be aware that it is not particularly XP friendly. I've had it crash the PC more than once.
